30 Things about me - #12 - I love rain
Rain is beautiful, more so when you grow up in a place where it rains not more than a month in a year. It was so rare that we treasured it dearly. I am not the kind that curls up with a book and coffee/tea when it rains. I rather love watching the rain. Watching it fall, every droplet hit the earth and then bounce back. Few sights are as lovely. In Germany though, it rains a LOT that it drives me nuts many a time. And it gets cold here when it rains and that makes me very uncomfortable. So what I have in this country is a love-hate relationship with rain.

30 Things about me #11 - I love painting people without faces
Most of my figurative art does not focus on the faces of the subjects. A lot of them are infact cropped without the faces seen. A couple of reasons for this. One is that I want my subjects to be relatable to everyone and not having a face helps that. Anyone looking at the painting could see a bit of themselves in it. The more important reason is that I am pathetic with doing faces and have a long way to go.:) Most of the time I do not want to overdo a face and end up spoiling a decent painting. So there!

The image in the DPW link is more accurate than the one here. It seems very saturated here. The background is not so green in real. I wonder what it is with blogger!

30 things about me #8 - The single biggest regret of my life...
...is that I cannot play an instrument. Make that even worse, I have no knowledge of any music whatsoever. I did not pursue it even though I attended some classes as a child. Yes yes, I do know that I can still go learn something. I am definitely planning on that once I get some breathing time. My life currently is too full and I have no meaningful time that I can devote towards this. It is on my bucket list though.:)

This painting has been done using the Zorn palette of cadmium red light, yellow ochre, ivory black and titanium white. It is based on a reference image from Morguefile.

SOLD - Music at the park - Original Figurative Painting in Oils

I clicked this reference at a public park a couple of years ago, and it was unearthed recently. I wanted to give a shot at a tighter crop, let me know what you think. I am quite happy with it.:)

Sunshine stroll - Figurative beach painting in Oils

This is one of those references that made me wish I was transported right there. With the gorgeous sun, lapping waters and a stroll all alone with nothing on the mind. Ha! I wish!

It is also my favorite painting of the week, I am quite pleased with how it turned out.

"Face off!" - Original Oil beach painting by Nithya Swaminathan

When I did two kid paintings on the beach, all my other beach references came gushing back to me and I will be continuing with them one by one.

I started this painting originally with both the figures seen in full, and a bit of the sky too in the background. I had stopped it at a stage where there was an hour's work needed. When I looked at it the next day though, I did not like it and felt the figures weren't interesting enough. Then I sketched them out again in a closer crop and felt it worked a little better. So went ahead and wiped off the painting and started afresh.

I did not take a picture of the initial version of this painting, so that it would have been nice to look at them side by side. Oh well, but I am glad that I went ahead and changed it instead of trying to "fix" it. Let me know how you like it.

Weeekend news - Original painting of people in summer

I have been having a ball with this long horizontal format, they are super fun! This one too is from a reference taken from a park nearby, summer impressions 2011.

Family fun - Original Painting of People in Summer

Loved this little family having a splash at a lake nearby, and how the smallest one is introduced to water at such an early age! Just had to paint it :)

A book and some sunshine - Original figurative painting of people in summer

This is one of my absolute favorite references. I painted her couple of years ago in Acrylics in a different format. Wanted to give it a shot again in oils and here it is.:)

"Need no Company" - Original Figurative Oil Painting, 7 by 5 inches

I love watching waves, patterns in water and so on. Endlessly. And I *love* watching people who do the same. Enjoying the company of nature and some solitude, just the way I like it.

Budding footballer - Original Textured Oil Painting, 7 by 5 inches - SOLD

The Germans probably start playing "fussball" before they start walking.;-) Loved this little boy carrying a  ball and walking towards the lawn for a game of football. I am truly having a ball with all these paintings of children and I am getting some very nice feedback for them. Hope you like it.

Mirror mirror on the Wall - Some fun with figures!

Every once in a while, I make random searches for images in stock websites and in the reference image library in WetCanvas. Not that I am done painting with all my own images and am running out of stuff to paint, but just to get my creative juices flowing I look at different images, and then work up possible compositions in the mind and so on.

That's how I landed on this image at sxc.hu. And loved it so much that I just dropped everything else that I was doing and got to this. Loved the idea of painting this guy and his very many mirror reflections without showing a glimpse of the face. This one too is painted only with the primaries. No burnt sienna on my palette, though it forms a large part of the painting.

Coming up with a title for this one was great fun. I first named it "Glass Palace", which was of course oh-so-boring and pretty lame. And then I wanted to name it "Infinite Loop". That's the first thought that comes to my mind thinking of these endless mirror reflections. My husband felt that non techies would not get it though and that would be a bummer too. Just then my friend Arvind suggested this title to me on Facebook. He originally said "Mirror mirror on the wall, tell me who can count them all". Since it was too long a title, I just cropped it :)

Splashing Around - Sun, sands and some kids!

While I can sit for hours together all alone at a beach, the other thing that I greatly enjoy is children playing in the sand and water. It makes me very nostalgic and I get transported back to my childhood when playing with cousins and friends at the beach was such a regular affair. I loved this boy running around in the water.

I added the bigger male figure in the front to bring in more distance into the frame. I was quite in a double mind whether or not to add the bigger figure, then went for it. What do you think of it? Do you like the painting? Do let me know.

Seduction - Palette Knife Tango painting in Oils

By now I am sure it would be very evident that I love painting the Tango and it is such an oft repeated motif in my work. I just thought how it would be to do without the legs for once. Most of my Tango paintings, if not all of them, primarily have red and black in the palette. I also went in for a different palette doing away with red and going in for a lot of browns.

And this painting is much larger than my other Tango pieces. Let me know what you think. I did not like it that much initially, but now I like it. After setting it aside for a while I did not want to change anything about it, which is a good thing.
