Doc's Window - Oil on board, 6 by 6 inches

I love the windows in this country, and the way people set up flowers hanging from the windows. They are so pretty and makes a walk in the neighbourhood so worthwhile. These bright red flowers were at the window sill at my doc. I was there waiting a couple of weeks ago, when I thought these flowers looked incredible bathed in the morning light. They just had to be painted. I clicked the window from both sides, so hopefully tomorrow I shall post the view from the "other side" :-)

I painted this one very differently from how I usually do. I generally tend to establish my mid tones first and then go in for the lights and the darks. Today, I laid down all the darks using Burnt Umber and some Grey/Blues. The whole painting took shape almost monochromatic. I then finished it with the flowers. The little spots of Cad Red light were done at the very end. I decided to leave the background as it is, without adding any further detail. It looked finished to me and I did not want to mess it up further.

SOLD - Spotting swans - Original Figurative Painting in Oils

Spotted at the banks of the Alster, in beautiful Hamburg. I was away for Easter and happened to click some good references. Feels good to be back at the easel after a mini break.

SOLD - Morning Walk - Original Figurative Painting in Oils

I vividly remember taking this picture over 4 years ago on one of our weekend morning walks. I loved the woman's bright red jacket and took a picture, and forgot all about it. It resurfaced again recently and I decided to paint it before I miss out again. Love the play of complements and the spring backdrop. Red makes me happy always :) Let me know how you like it!

SOLD - Music at the park - Original Figurative Painting in Oils

I clicked this reference at a public park a couple of years ago, and it was unearthed recently. I wanted to give a shot at a tighter crop, let me know what you think. I am quite happy with it.:)

SOLD - A Better View - Reworked

Regular followers of my work would recognise this piece from my 30 in 30 challenge in January 2014. It is one of those paintings where I knew something was not right but I could not point a finger at it. So after a good two months I picked it up again today and reworked it. I fixed quite a few things. There weren't major changes with respect to the proportions and stuff, but a lot of smaller changes here and there. I also pushed the values a bit more as it was full of mid range values the last time.

A look at both the pictures together to see the changes. Do you see all that has been fixed? :-)

SOLD - Team Work - Original Oil Painting of Children

I love scenes of children building sand castles. Watching them go about the process with all the seriousness gives me so much joy and the perfect opportunity for a lot of nice paintings. I have quite a few nice references and will be doing a couple of more pieces on this theme. They would make for a great collaged display too.

I find capturing wet sand extremely challenging, struggling to match the color and value every time I mixed it. Accommodating all the figures into the small canvas with the right proportions was a huge challenge too and I had fun! And I am quite happy with how this one turned out.

SOLD - The Onlookers

Over the last few days, I have been taking stock of my old paintings in the process of deciding which ones to trash and which ones to keep. There are some that I will be reworking a bit in an attempt to make them better. Most will be ruthlessly trashed. It was during one such reworking that I came across this reference from a few years ago. I had painted a different part of it, and this time, these two women caught my attention.

I tried to include some houses in the background hills, but wiped them off later in a change of mind. Wanted to keep it simple with the focus on just the figures.

"Say cheese" - 30 in 30, #4

I happened to spot these kids at a popular tourist attraction a couple of years ago. While I wanted to capture the girl taking a picture of one of the boys, I was pleasantly surprised to find the onlooker boy also in my reference. I have used a mix of the brush and the palette knife for this painting. The girl is one using the palette knife, and I have also used the knife for the foreground. The farther steps and the two boys are all done with the brush. They were two tricky for the knife and I could not risk messing up the painting.

My cozy corner - 30 in 30, #3

Took on another larger one today, this one too is a 12 by 6 inch piece. And managed to complete it from sketching to signing all in about 4 hours. Looks like all isn't lost yet.:-)

Long ago, I got one of Carol Marine's short art tutorials on DPW, one where she explains about color mixing and saturation. Though I got the tutorial quite a while back, I did not get to do a full fledged painting from what I learnt. I tried to make use of it here, this piece does not use any tube of green paint. All the green is mixed from the primaries. This whole piece uses 2 types of yellow, 2 types of blue and 1 red. That's all about it.

As a self taught artist who has not yet had the opportunity to attend a workshop with anyone, the tutorial was so informative and useful. It is of course common knowledge that one can paint only with the primaries, but Carol's demo videos get the point across very well. I loved it. There is still a long way to go for me with respect to handling edges and stuff, but I am immensely enjoying the process and learning a lot.

This piece is from a reference I caught at one of the city parks. They are one of my favourite places to watch people. A perfect sunny summer day, lost in a book. Such ideal settings are stuff that I can only dream of right now, considering my 1 year old just doesn't give me the time. So dream I do, and paint my dreams.:)

I have also painted it entirely with the palette knife. I find the knife my ideal tool for trees and foliage. Had a lot of fun with this one.
